What is meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is a serious disease caused by a bacterial infection. If you get this disease, the membranes that protect your brain and spinal cord will become inflamed. They will also swell up.

This disease spreads like most others. Someone with the disease sneezes or coughs. If you are close to this person, you may get infected with the bacteria. The bacteria will make you sick with meningococcal disease.

This disease is deadly. Therefore, it is important to get vaccinated. The vaccine is the safest and best way to prevent meningococcal disease.

What vaccines are available?

There are two types of meningococcal vaccines:

  • Meningococcal conjugate or MenACWY vaccine
    • This is the vaccine for all teens and preteens ages 11-12. When they turn 16, they need another shot or “booster.”
    • It is also the vaccine for adults who have a higher risk of getting the disease
  • Serogroup B meningococcal or MenB vaccines
    • This vaccine is for people who are 10 years or older and have a higher risk of getting the disease.
    • Teens and young adults ages 16-23 should also receive this vaccine.
