Back to School Tips for Kids with Asthma

School can be hard for kids with asthma, but there are some things that you can do to help. Here are some tips to help your child stay healthy and be their best.

Talk To Your Child’s Teachers

It is important that teachers and school staff know that your child has asthma and how they can help. Talk to them about things that may trigger your child’s asthma and the symptoms of an asthma attack. Give your child’s teacher, the school nurse, and the front office a list of who to call in case of an emergency.

Triggers in the Classroom

Your child’s classrooms can have things like dust and pollen that can trigger asthma. Work with teachers to keep the classroom as asthma friendly as possible. You should also give your child’s teacher a written action plan that they can use if your child has an asthma attack.

Your Child’s Medication

Making sure that your child can still take their medicine if they need it while at school is important. Keep an inhaler both in the nurse’s office and with your child. Show your child how to use their inhaler the right way, so they can use it on their own if they need it.

Regular Check-Ins

Talking to your child about their asthma symptoms often. Ask about if they are having any problems while they are at school. Ask them if there a time of day, classroom or an activity that is triggering their asthma.

Have your child talk to their teacher or the school nurse if they are having problems with asthma while at school. By working together with teachers and school staff, you can help your child stay healthy and be their best at school.
