What do you know about Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder. It affects how a person moves. Each person may have different symptoms. The changes often happen slowly over time. Finding it early can help people manage it better.

If you think you or a loved one may have Parkinson’s, here are some early signs to watch for.

Five common movement signs

  1. Shaking in your finger, thumb, hand, or chin while resting
  2. Moving more slowly than usual
  3. Swinging your arms differently
  4. Stiff arms or legs that don’t loosen up
  5. Smaller handwriting

Other possible signs

  • Feeling sad or worried
  • Not wanting to be around others
  • Feeling dizzy when you stand up
  • Losing your sense of smell
  • Trouble sleeping

Parkinson’s disease can be hard to diagnose.

Having one or more of these signs doesn’t mean you have Parkinson’s. There is no single test for it. Your doctor will look at many things. This may include a physical exam, your medical history, and your symptoms.
