About Us

Who is Community Health Choice?

We are a local, non-profit, Managed Care Organization (MCO) offering Children's Medicaid (STAR) and CHIP programs. We also offer plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Community has a network of 10,000 doctors and 77 hospitals.

We are affiliated with the Harris Health System. However, we do not receive any money from Harris Health System or from Harris County taxpayers.

Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of underserved Texans by opening doors to healthcare and health-related social services.


Our Story

When we opened our doors 20 years ago, no one could have imagined what Community Health Choice would become. We began in 1997 with only a handful of employees who had a narrow mission: Improve the health of underserved children in Harris County by making health insurance more affordable.

Two decades later, everything we do is still guided by a mission to open doors to better health in Southeast Texas.

We’re proud of all that we have accomplished in the name of this mission, and that’s why we’re celebrating the remarkable chance we’ve been given to serve our Members. We feel humbled and honored by the opportunity to continue the important work we’re doing for the next 20 years and beyond.

Our Community Outreach Team:

  • Offers application assistance
  • Hosts fun back-to-school events
  • Hosts events with community-based organizations (CBOs)
  • Participates in local health fairs and events

  • Offers programs for asthma, diabetes, and high-risk pregnancy
